Star Wars A New Hope Recasting

Okay, before you read the headline and freak out, there are no plans to remake any of the trilogies and that is a great thing. While we may have had our objections to the special editions, at least George didn’t authorize a full redo of the movies like some studios did with titles like Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and Clash of the Titans. But we got to thinking, who would play in such a remake if they did decide to make one. While there are all sorts of stars we’d like to throw into the Star Wars universe, just for fun, we thought we’d stick to what might actually work, rather than fantasizing too much. We asked our staff and this is who we came up with. Agree or disagree, leave us a comment.

Luke Skywalker – Justin Bieber. Just kidding. Although he does kind of have the hair for it and we could see him crying on the pole when told that Darth is his father later on, but our candidate would be Tobey McGuire. He’s already got a lot of experience in the action genre and has that sympathetic quality that Luke needs from the audience.

Princess Leia – There was very little argument on this one. We thought who would be sassy, beautiful, smart, quick witted, and fight like a warrior? Mila Kunis came to mind. Not only did she play the very sassy Jackie in That 70’s Show, but she proved she can also be very serious, as in Black Swan, or a fighter in Max Payne. And she would look pretty good in the slave bikini outfit in Jabba’s lair later on.

Han Solo – This was a tough one for us. There were a lot of names thrown around, including the late Heath Ledger, who I have to admit would have made a good Han, but we finally decided on Nathan Fillion from ABC’s Castle and Firefly. After all, he already was the captain of a popular ship and he has the tongue-in-cheek nature to play the rapscallion.

Obi-Wan Kenobi – Ian McKellen (Lord of the Ring’s Gandalf) jumped to mind for this part. He has that fatherly figure personality going for him and he’s British. If Liam Neeson wasn’t already Qui Gon Jin, he would have made an awesome Obi-Wan.

Darth Vader – Since James Earl Jones can still do voiceovers, I see no reason to ask anyone else. As to the body, perhaps the Rock would work or one of the pro-wrestlers since they act on TV all the time in their pretense of being fighters.

General Tarkin – We had quite a discussion over this one as well. Some mentioned Patrick Stewart, but he seemed too nice to really pull it off and plus he’d be really hard to see as anything else but Captain Picard. So we decided on Malcolm McDowell who plays evil, yet civil quite well.

Uncle Owen – Mark Addy, who played was probably best known as the father in Still Standing and Fred Flintstone in Viva Rock Vegas. He is currently starring in HBO’s Game of Thrones.

Aunt Beru – We were thinking Sally Field, but since it’s only a bit part really, she might be too busy for that, so our next choice was someone that Doctor Who fans might know and that’s Katy Manning, who played Jo Grant, the third doctor’s companion. She recently appeared in the Doctor Who spinoff, Sarah Jane Adventures, with the current Doctor Matt Smith. After seeing her, we were thinking she might make a great Aunt Beru.

C3PO – We’d have to keep Anthony Daniels since he is still playing the gold robot, most recently in Star Tours II: The Adventure Continues which is Disney’s theme park ride.

R2D2 – Cray MXP or some other CGI rendering computer with sound from Skywalker Ranch.

Chewbacca – Josh Holloway from Lost might be a good Chewbacca. Not sure why, but it seemed as good a choice as any.

And I think that covers most of the major actors in the film. We were going to include General Motti, who was strangled by Darth Vader after questioning the Force, but we couldn’t agree on who we would to see strangled more by a Dark Lord of the Sith.|
