Star Wars News of the Galaxy for December 2 2011

Chewbacca to appear on Glee, Minecraft Player recreates trench scene, and Darth Vader plays the Grinch. All in this week's news.

Fans of Chewbacca will either be overjoyed or appalled to see their favorite wookie on Fox’s musical show Glee, but he is going to make an appearance in their Christmas special. We aren’t sure how Han’s number two will be included, but we are thinking it’s some sort of tribute to the Star Wars Holiday special? Matthew Morrison, who plays Will Schuester on the show and doubling as director, said that they had to get permission to use Chewbacca from Lucas, but he gave his blessings for his character’s inclusion. After all, it was 20th Century Fox who distributed Star Wars.

The odd thing about Morrison’s comments to WENN was that he said that only one actor could play the wookie, having done so for the last 12 years, and that they were flying him in special, but they would not give his name. We doubt that it’s Peter Mayhew, the original actor as you know, as he’s 72 now and has trouble walking, spending most of his time in a wheelchair. Presumably it’s the same guy who played Chewy in the skit with Harrison Ford on Jimmy Kimmel, but that’s just an assumption.

In other news, Minecraft is an online game where people can build things in a virtual world and a Star Wars fan named Grahame has used that to recreate the trench scene from A New Hope, at least the part where Darth Vader joins the party. The recreation looks a bit like a stop action animation in an 8 bit 3D world, but it is very cool that he was able to do this. You can see the video on YouTube above. His next project, he says, is working on a whole movie Rise of the Rebellion which should be out in 2012. We wish him luck.

And finally it was a slow week news wise, so here is another cool video to get you into the holiday spirit, the Sith That Stole Christmas, a mashup of scenes from the original trilogy and the Boris Karloff narration and the song from the animated feature The Grinch Stole Christmas. Of course, Darth Vader is portrayed as the Grinch. We wouldn’t have it any other way, although I think the Ewoks as Who’s might have been pushing it some.

That’s all we have time for this week. Thanks for reading.
