This Week in Star Wars January 26 2011

Sorry, we were off yesterday, but we present you with this week’s Star Wars news.

Star Wars: The Old Republic, which is EA’s venture into the largest Star Wars MMO ever, has been one that the fans have been clamoring over for quite awhile and while no official word has come down that Spring 2011 is not the timeframe for the release, some sites are saying that unnamed sources are whispering that EA may be setting that back to September. If true, this is bound to disappoint the gamers waiting for this title, and probably do more to scare EA investors, who are already wary on the massive project that EA has thrust itself into, with no track record for success in the MMO world, having failed with Warhammer earlier. We’ll have more as it comes out.

Don’t run to your local spaceport just yet. George Lucas, who Seth Rogen recently claimed when on a rant about the end of the world in 2012, has stepped forward to dispel the rumor. It seems that both are having a little fun and the blogs have been eating it up. Of course, the publicity also fared well for Rogen’s new movie Green Hornet. When asked if Lucas would take Rogen with them into space should the worst happen, George replied that he would take Spielberg and Chris Rock on the Millenium Falcon that is probably parked in his garage.

Volkswagen of America, who has been absent from advertising in recent Super Bowls, will have a two ads this year for the Passat and the 21st Century Beetle. In the Passat ad, a young lad, dressed as Darth Vader, uses his powers of the Force to start the car in the driveway, and is shocked when it actually does start. Was it the Force? Find out in the 30 second commercial to air during the most popular football game of the year.

Students at MIT Media Lab are working on a way to bring the Princess Leia hologram scene to life by using the Kinect for the Xbox 360 as a 3D camera and feeding the data into a holographic projector. They even had their subject dress up as Carrie Fisher’s character as a bit of a tribute and some flair. And while their attempt is not quite where they’d like it to be, it does show that there is promise in the concept. Here is a video.

There is a hint in the new Star Wars: The Clone Wars that Darth Maul could be making an appearance on Cartoon Network’s hit show. His brother Savage Oppress which was recently established was told by his mother that Maul survived the battle with Kenobi and was still alive. What that means we are not yet sure, but it certainly sounds like a setup to bring the popular character to the series.

And if you really have someone that is a major fan of the movies and have $3000 in disposable income, you can provide them with the greatest gift of all in the Star Wars universe, 1416 frames of the film put together in a book for each movie, handpicked by George himself. With only 1138 copies (a reference to THX-1138) to be made, they are sure to be collector’s items in the future. Each set comes in a nice wooden box with medallions for Darth Vader and Yoda on opposite sides, provides 6 slots divided by trilogy for the six leather bound hardcover volumes. Each set will include a bookplate on a portfolio cased signed by George Lucas himself.

And that’s it for this week in Star Wars. Tune in next week with more news from around the universe.
