Which side of Budapest is better to stay on, Buda or Pest?

I’m planning a four-day trip to Budapest and I can’t decide where to base myself. Buda seems quieter and more historic, but Pest looks like it has all the ruin bars and nightlife. I want a good mix of sightseeing and local food without being stuck in a purely touristy area. Any suggestions?
