Star Wars News from Around the Galaxy March 3 2011

As we’ve said before, Lucas will be releasing the six episodes of Star Wars once again in glorious 3D, jumping on the bandwagon of all the other movies that will be rereleased like Titanic. The problem is that movies that are converted to 3D from 2D are not very impressive, at least not so far. Of course, if anyone is going to have the technical knowhow to do it, it would be Lucas and Industrial Light and Magic. The good news is that the theatrical release, starting on February 10, 2012 with Star Wars Episode I: Phantom Menace, will bring the Star Wars movies to a whole new generation. And many of the children that see the movies really liked the first three episodes, versus episodes 4,5,6 because they are more modernized, where to them, the original trilogy seems a bit out of date even with the enhancements. The only scary thing is seeing Jar Jar’s tongue coming out of the screen to grab a fruit. How rude.

Bounty Hunters have been announced for Star Wars: The Old Republic and they will be armed with some pretty cool weaponry. Imagine being able to just freeze someone in carbonite with a handheld device instead of a huge chamber. They will have jetpacks like our good friend Boba Fett and a flamethrower to really heat up the action. While we don’t have much other info at this time about this class, we hope to learn more soon. Star Wars: The Old Republic is set to premier in September.

Scattered Trees, a band in Chicago, has released a video for their song “Love and Leave” that features the group dressed in Storm Trooper outfits, holding Queen Amidala in their apartment in shackles to make sure that she doesn’t leave the lead singer. The video itself seems to focus on the depression that living a life working for the Dark Lord can have on one’s souls. Their album entitled “Sympathy” will be released at a music station in a galaxy near you on April 5th. Here is the video. Don’t forget to look for the cameo by Boba Fett.

There is perhaps no more iconic image than Luke Skywalker standing in the desert in front of the Lars Homestead with the two suns in the background. Well, believe it or not, the film was made in Tunisia and the set is still there, but in bad need of an overhaul because of the harsh weather. Like Tatooine, the storms and sand can play havoc on the structures. Mark Dermul, a big Star Wars fan, and his group wants to get enough money to take to Tunisia to restore this piece of film history. He is trying to raise $10,000 and has already raised all but a couple thousand. You can help them to get to their goal by donating through Paypal or by ordering a copy of his guidebook of the Star Wars locations in Tunisia. The book runs $45 with $5 going towards the restoration fund. You can also visit the website at Save the Igloo

And that is for the news around the galaxy. Tune in next week.
