Star Wars Vs. Star Trek. Big Guns Weigh In They Have

Ever since the 70’s, the battle between the fans of Star Wars and the fans of the Star Trek have had a constant argument about which is better, but pretty much for the most part, the main principles in these films have stayed out of the fray, leaving it to those that watch to decide. But when Captain Kirk spoke openly about his reasons while Star Trek was superior, Princess Leia couldn’t let that it go without comment, just like when she told Han she wasn’t a committee.

William Shatner fired the first shot in this latest volley that sounds like something you’d hear in someone’s basement over chips and Call of Duty plays. He criticized Star Wars for being more about special effects than the personal and philosophical subjects brought up in the series. He further said that Lucas’ work was really a derivative of Star Trek presented years later, and thus could not possibly be as good as the franchise he starred in for years. Maybe he has a point, but he’s being unfair to George because Lucas had to tell his whole story in 6-7 hours. When you have to cram a lot of material in that time, you really don’t have the luxury to delve deep into the political ramifications of the Empire on the outer rim systems. Something Lucas tried to correct in the prequel, much to everyone’s criticism.

And that was the bulk of Carrie Fisher’s reply, that they aren’t something that really can be compared. In a video on YouTube, Fisher stated that the only thing they really have in common is Star in the title and there was space travel. Instead of leaving it that though, she said something that is sure to get the Trekkies’ blood pressure up and their phasers on more than stun. Fisher ridiculed Star Trek saying that the name Klingon sounded more like a laundry detergent and that Leia’s hair buns were much cooler than Spock’s ears. Yes, she went there, as Fisher is not about pulling punches these days.

Of course, they both have reason to make their arguments. Some of it is about pride, but it’s also about staying relevant in today’s world. Fisher has a new book out and William Shatner, as much as he claims to hate being associated with the franchise, deep down seems to miss those days where he sat in the Captain’s chair. But they are also both extremely accomplished actors, writers, and even producers, and to hear them arguing like high school students over which is better, I have to admit is amusing as all out.

Course, now the ball is in Shatner’s court…
